Book Description
Excerpt from Catalogue of the Wheeler Gift of Books, Pamphlets and Periodicals in the Library of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, Vol. 1 It is my privilege to be able to announce the completion of negotiations by which I have become the possessor of the very remarkable collection of electrical books of the late Mr. Latimer Clark of London. My object in securing the collection was to present the books to our Institute and make it the custodian of the most complete electrical Library in the world, as well as to stimulate such interest that the Institute may in time own a permanent home in New York. The assurance received from those who have cooperated with me in this undertaking, that the collection is very complete and includes practically every known publication in the English language previous to 1886, on magnetism, electricity, galvanism, the lodestone, mariner's compass, etc., have been more than verified by my own examination of the books since their arrival in this country. There are among its 7,000 titles many books which are not to be found in either of the famous libraries with which it has been compared, and I find that there are even some of the very earliest examples of printing. Book Description
An eye-opening look at alternative careers for those with a sci-tech background--whether they be librarians or scientists or engineers, this exciting volume fills a gap in the professional literature. The contributors--all of whom have pursued alternative careers--provide detailed accounts of their jobs, including skills and education needed, working environment, job rewards and challenges, and future prospects. Although most of these positions fall outside traditional career fields--information broker, translator, acquisitions editor, information resources manager, research scientist, online database manager, and abstractor and indexer--they offer options for professionals seeking challenging new careers.

Telecommunications Research Resources

Telecommunications Research Resources PDF Author: James K. Bracken

Book Description
As the telecommunication and information field expands and becomes more varied, so do publications about these technologies and industries. This book is a first attempt to provide a general guide to that wealth of English-language publications -- both books and periodicals -- on all aspects of telecommunication. It is a comprehensive, evaluative sourcebook for telecommunications research in the United States that brings together a topically-arranged, cross-referenced, and indexed volume in one place. The information provided is only available by consulting a succession of different directories, guides, bibliographies, yearbooks, and other resources. On the one hand, it is a directory that describes in detail the major entities that comprise the American telecommunication research infrastructure including federal and state government offices and agencies, and private, public, and corporate research institutions. On the other hand, it is a bibliography that identifies and assesses the most important and useful reference and critical resources about U.S. telecommunication history, technology, industry and economics, social applications and impacts, plus policy, law and regulations, and role in the global telecommunication marketplace. No existing guide covers all of these aspects in the depth and detail of this volume.

Book Description
In Physicists Look Back: Studies in the History of Physics, various international contributors ranging from physicists, engineers, theoreticians, experimentalists, and information scientists to educationalists, science historians, sociologists, and physics teachers discuss the history of physics. They describe their own research developments, demonstrate ways the history of physics can be helpful in teaching physics and in clearing up difficult concepts, and offer professional advice about resources and methods. This diversified book provides a historical background to modern physics and illustrates how an appreciation of the historical context of physics can lead to a better understanding of modern physics. It covers the history of ozone, the ionosphere, plasma physics, the technical developments of the electron microscope and crystallographic x-ray photography, and the history of the Josephson effect. Well illustrated and containing some autobiographical research not previously published, this resource is valuable reading for professional physicists, physics teachers, educationalists, historians and philosophers of science, and physicists.
