Book Description
Wretched writing is the lowest of the low; it is a felonious assault on the English language. Exuberantly excessive, it is a sin committed often by amateurs and all-too-frequently by gifted writers having an off day. In short, it’s very bad writing. Truly bad. Appallingly bad. It’s also very funny. A celebration of the worst writing imaginable, Wretched Writing includes inadvertently filthy book titles, ridiculously overwrought passages from novels, bombastic and confusing speeches, moronic oxymorons, hyperactive hyperbole, horribly inappropriate imagery in ostensibly hot sex scenes, mangled clichés, muddled metaphors, and unintended double entendres. Sit back and enjoy these deliciously dreadful samples, and try not to cringe too much.

Situates the act of critical reading in the context of poetic aesthetics. This volume situates the act of critical reading in the context of poetic aesthetics. Running alongside recent post-structuralist theories, the textuality of such matters as literary discourse, history, media, philosophy and religion has emerged as a focal point of debate in the humanities. The essays here examine how questions of the canon, genres, and transformation of texts challenge the present epistemological situation; taking an interdisciplinary approach to textual readings, their methodology is drawn from a range of literary figures and critics, including Lessing, Kafka, Walter Benjamin, and Derrida. The study also addresses the controversial predicament of subjectivity asone of the key terms in current literary and historical scholarship.

Book Description
Havelock Ellis' reputation has been in free fall since his death in 1939. Though still acknowledged as a pioneer in the study of human sexuality, he now evokes hostility from those he would have considered his natural heirs. Feminist authors have been particularly critical, identifying him as the kind of friend women would have done well to ignore. While there is no need to put Ellis back on his pedestal, it is clear that recent interpretations underestimate his significance for progressive politics on both sides of the Atlantic. This book examines the many areas to which he contributed (preventive medicine, progressive penology, internationalism, the championing of Ibsen and Nietzsche, as well as feminism and human sexuality) and argues that the vision unifying his endeavors was rooted in the radical generational movement which swept through London in the late nineteenth century. This approach offers both appreciation of Ellis and a richer, more realistic view of the progressive tradition itself.
